The 2019 Foote Education Conference was held September 12-14, in San Diego, California. Thanks go to Robert and Deanna Foote (with assistance of Lori Fisher), who hosted this great event.
The Foote Family Education Conference is organized every other year under the auspices of the Foote Family Association of America hereinafter referred to as FFAA.
The Conference was held at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley, which provided a well-run and conveniently located venue.
Thursday provided an opportunity for visiting and getting acquainted in the Hospitality Room.
On Friday, most of the group took the opportunity to go on a bus trip. Our first stop was Balboa Park. There were so many things to see within walking distance of our drop-off point that it was difficult to choose. Various members went to the Museum of Man, Visitor’s center, Japanese Friendship Garden, Automotive Museum, and Air and Space Museum.
We stopped at Liberty Marketplace for lunch, and again, there was so much to choose from, that it was difficult to decide what to get! Many were exposed to foods they had never seen!
A short business meeting took place in the late afternoon. In the evening, Robert Foote gave a “workshop” entitled Foote’s in the Civil War, from Three Perspectives which was well received. Refreshments and mingling ended the evening.
Saturday was an opportunity to explore San Diego on your own, and members took to opportunity to visit Old Town, take a Harbor Cruise, go to Seaport Village, do shopping, and John and Susan managed to find the ranch of The Cisco Kid just north of San Diego. Some of us took advantage of unique local Mexican and Seafood restaurants.
Saturday evening was the bi-annual Banquet and General meeting. We were able to vote in much needed new persons for positions on the Board. We had an interesting presentation by Barry Goldlust from the San Diego History Center regarding the history of San Diego’s struggles with water usage and supply over the last few centuries. As always, a raffle and group pictures completed the evening.
A lot was accomplished to position the FFAA to move forward in its mission over the next two years, and we look forward to meeting again in 2021 in Boston.
